An advanced cross-flow filtration system is now available for biotechnology and other life sciences research and production laboratories.

Sartorius Stedim Biotech (Gottingen, Germany) has announced the launch of the SARTOFLOW Smart benchtop, cross-flow ultrafiltration and diafiltration system.

The SARTOFLOW Smart is a modular and flexible small scale benchtop cross-flow system optimized for ultrafiltration and diafiltration applications used in many downstream processes, such as purification of vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, and recombinant proteins. The system is suitable for use in research laboratories and in laboratory environments for process development and clinical trials as well as for cGMP production environments.

The SARTOFLOW Smart system includes a Sartocon Slice 200 filter cassette holder that can accommodate cassette areas from 200 square centimeters to 0.14 square meters membrane area; one liter graduated recirculation vessel made of transparent PSU with a self-sealing lid; and a vortex breaker with magnetic stir bar for effective mixing.

The tank is located on top of a load cell for level control. The systems includes three pressure sensors, one each in the feed, retentate, and permeate lines for operating the system at user-defined set points. Interactive prompts for easy guidance through entire control sequences are displayed conveniently on a seven inch touch screen.

One peristaltic diafiltration pump is available, an option that enables loading product or buffer as a discrete process step. An electronic balance is an integral component of the system for monitoring the quantitative collection of filtrate and its collection rate. A low shear four-piston membrane pump provides a wide range of flow rates making it possible to use a wide variety of membrane areas.

“SARTOFLOW Smart is a milestone development in the landscape of small cross-flow systems. It combines outstanding technology with options that are normally only available with process systems. With an exceptionally wide working range of membrane surface areas, the system is the perfect tool for both R&D optimization trials and cGMP production,” said Dr. Marc Jenke, expert for benchtop cross-flow filtration systems at Sartorius Stedim Biotech.
