Altona Diagnostics GmbH (Hamburg, Germany) exhibited its AltoStar product line of automated real-time PCR testing solutions suitable for high-throughput laboratories at ECCMID 2022. The event brought together the best and brightest in the field of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases from all over the world.

The flexible and efficient AltoStar Molecular Diagnostic Workflow automates your PCR analyses from sample extraction to PCR results and enables full traceability. At ECCMID 2022, altona demonstrated the AltoStar Automation System AM16, a pipetting workstation, in combination with the AltoStar Connect software, is the centerpiece of the AltoStar Workflow. It is intended to be used in combination with the AltoStar Purification Kit 1.5, the AltoStar Internal Control 1.5 and altona Diagnostics PCR kits for automated purification of nucleic acids and automated assay setup for in vitro diagnostic purposes.

The AltoStar Connect software used to operate the AltoStar Automation System AM16 is a time-saving state-of-the-art application software that provides loading dialogue to guide through each loading step in order to ensure the completeness of the set up procedure. It can be connected to one or several real-time PCR instruments for their automatic programming and allows sample information and worklist to be imported via barcode reader or LIMS. It features predefined purification protocols and offers automated selection of controls and standards.

In addition, altona presented the AltoStar reagents that are altona Diagnostics-specific products, which are part of the workflow based on AltoStar AM16 and AltoStar Connect software. The AltoStar PCR kits are based on real-time PCR technology, utilizing PCR for amplification of specified target sequences and target-specific probes in order to detect amplified DNA or RNA. The AltoStar Purification Kit 1.5 uses magnetic particle technology and is intended to be used for automated isolation and purification of nucleic acids from specified human specimens for in vitro diagnostic purposes. It permits simultaneous purification of RNA and DNA from multiple sample types. The AltoStar Internal Control 1.5 is intended to be used as a nucleic acid extraction, amplification and detection control for in vitro diagnostic purposes. The control contains the internal purification control and is added at the beginning of the purification procedure. All tubes and containers of the AltoStar Purification Kit 1.5, the AltoStar Internal Control 1.5 and the AltoStar PCR Kit 1.5 are barcoded by the AltoStar system for automated identification, localization and verification of lot conformity, as well as non-expiry.
