Gynecological samples can now be processed on two new instruments that equip the laboratory with state-of-the-art automation and productivity for preparing cytology slides.

Hologic Inc. (Marlborough, MA, USA) has released the ThinPrep 5000 Processor and the ThinPrep 5000 with Autoloader System for processing gynecological (Pap tests) samples, as well as proprietary Non-Gyn and UroCyte vials.

Under the precise control of the ThinPrep microprocessor, a gentle dispersion step breaks up blood, mucus, and non-diagnostic debris, then thoroughly mixes the sample. With a series of negative pressure pulses, fluid is drawn though the ThinPrep filter to collect a thin, even layer of diagnostic cellular material. The ThinPrep processor constantly monitors the rate of flow through the filter during this process, collecting an appropriate amount of material for testing. The cellular material is transferred to a glass slide using computer-controlled mechanical positioning and positive air pressure. The slide is then ejected into a cell fixative bath, ready for staining and evaluation.

The ThinPrep 5000 Processor is a benchtop unit designed to address specific customer needs, including walkaway automation for up to 20 slides per run. It provides fully automated slide preparation, including automated capping and de-capping of ThinPrep vials, and chain of custody verification.

ThinPrep 5000 with Autoloader System has a capacity of 160 samples in a single run, which provides users with up to eight hours of walkaway time. The system provides continuous access to vials, consumables, and processed slides for loading and unloading. It also provides laser slide etching of barcodes, which simplifies processing and helps ensure chain-of-custody.

"Our launch of these two new ThinPrep processors provides customers access to the next generation in cytology slide processing," said Tom West, president of diagnostic division solutions at Hologic. "Each instrument provides significant improvements in customer convenience, and is an important addition to our portfolio of market-leading cytology products."
