A new hand-held analyzer has been developed to provide a simple and reliable point-of-care blood test for hemoglobin, enabling rapid diagnosis of conditions such as anemia.

EKF Diagnostics (Cardiff, UK) has introduced its “STAT-Site M Hgb” hand-held hemoglobin analyzer at the 2013 International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) meeting. The STAT-Site M Hgb incorporates a new strip-based test for hemoglobin into a new, mobile analyzer, combining low cost per test with portability. This efficient analyzer is a maintenance-free, pocket-sized device that reliably delivers accurate hemoglobin analysis results within 30 seconds from 15 µL of finger-prick whole blood. Intuitive, step by step on-screen instructions minimize training and help maintain ease of use.

Due to its durability, portability, and user-friendliness, the STAT-Site M Hgb hemoglobin photometer is especially suited to developing world blood screening programs as well as for other settings where users are mobile. With an operating temperature range of 16-35 °C, the analyzer is also well suited for field use. Only one 3V Li type battery is required per 1,000 tests.

At ISBT, EKF also demonstrated its “Hemo Control” (“HemoPoint H2” in USA and Asia) hemoglobin analyzer designed to provide quantitative, lab quality results (imprecision < 2%) within 25 seconds for blood banks, hospitals, and clinics. From one simple test this portable and robust analyzer delivers results for both hemoglobin and hematocrit and, new for 2013, includes “Hemo Control Light” preloaded data management software that enables users to connect directly to hospital and laboratory information systems. Hemo Control uses the unique, patented “NXT” microcuvette technology, enabling precise and simple blood collection while reducing the risk of air bubble formation in blood samples, thereby also reducing inconvenience, waste, and cost.
