Thermo Fisher Scientific (Runcorn, United Kingdom) will display its latest anatomical pathology solutions at the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Congress 2011 to be held at the International Convention Center (ICC) Birmingham from September 26-28, 2011.

The anatomical pathology solutions to be exhibited include the Thermo Scientific next generation STP 420ES tissue processor, the Cryostar NX70 cryostat, and SecureSette tissue embedding cassettes.

The latest STP 420ES tissue processor is suitable for high-throughput tissue processing. It enables faster turnaround times for same-day diagnosis and leaner workflows through operational flexibility. Using a dual-chamber design, which features rotational agitation that increases flow of traditional reagents by sevenfold to reduce processing times, the STP 420ES can process up to 420 cassettes per run. Holding 360 and 60 cassettes in the first and second chambers respectively, the second chamber allows independent processing of stat samples, as well as special or difficult tissues, without disrupting routine workflow or requiring the use of a second instrument.

The new CryoStar NX70 Cryostat offers better sectioning quality and increased user comfort. It accommodates a wide range of cryotomy applications for both clinical and research use. Its special features include rapid response temperature control and an innovative knife carrier feed to deliver precise section thickness and consistency.

The Thermo Scientific SecureSette tissue cassette enables lean workflow and enhances patient safety. Orientation is maintained throughout tissue processing and embedding, which means that the cassette is not opened until the sample is embedded in paraffin and ready for sectioning.

Quick and reproducible instrument set-up is simple with the CryoStar NX70’s intuitive LCD display and electronic touch-screen, together with joystick control. Fine adjustment specimen orientation on all axes enables fast and easy specimen alignment. The innovative temperature control system adjusts quickly to changes in settings, enabling rapid cooling, as well as consistent and precise temperature control. Three user-defined favorites enable frequently used temperature settings to be instantly recalled.

During the IBMS congress, Thermo Fisher will also demonstrate products from its immunohistochemistry (IHC) range, including the Thermo Scientific Autostainer and Quanto Reagents. These products offer rapid turnaround times and a flexible, total IHC workflow solution. In addition, PrintMate and SlideMate, the latest additions to Thermo Fisher's slide labeling and tracking product ranges will be presented.
