正在开发中的一套诊断平台利用线性二色性(LD)现象,可作多种用途。这项技术的关键特性是它能同时测量同一份样本里的多个靶体。

该技术的原理是把细长的纳米尺度分子排在检验盒的微流控腔内,自成一体的无菌检验盒装有执行检验所需的全部试剂。科学家从不同角度将极化光照进微流控腔,再用一只手持式外部光读器检测腔内分子的排列。

这项技术是英国伯明翰的线性诊断有限责任公司发明的,该公司是伯明翰大学的校办企业。科学家可以用与溶液中靶体结合的检测探针修饰分子。如果样本里有细菌,探针就会与不同的细菌靶体结合,从而改变微流控液流中所附着分子的排列。可以用抗体作为探针,它能识别特定的细菌细胞表面标志物,探针也可能是短DNA片段,它包括的基因序列能识别特定的细菌转录本或者抗生素耐受性的编码基因。

线性诊断公司的检验产品不要求预先制备样本,虽然科学家们强调该产品一开始将主要用于尿路感染(UTI),但是既可检验尿样,又可检验全血样本。尽管方便快速的浸量尺检验这样的技术能指示细菌的存在,但它们缺少抗生素耐受性方面的信息,而线性诊断公司的技术能做到。据估计,在平台上运行的检验需花费20美元,也就是15英镑。

该公司的联合创始人暨技术总监Matthew R. Hicks博士说:“其它分子结合技术需要多步处理,包括清洗。相较而言,我们的平台是个单步过程,将来可改作多种其它用途,包括性传播感染(STI)和热带病的检测。我们开发出的试剂使我们能够用成本较低的硬件运行我们正在开发的测定并达到足够的性能。”
