COPAN Diagnostics (Murrieta, CA, USA) showcased its range of fully automated solutions for identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) in clinical microbiology at the 32nd European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID 2022).

COPAN demonstrated the FDA-cleared Colibri, a fully automated specimen workup instrument designed to prepare MALDI-TOF ID targets and create bacterial suspensions for AST. Colibri is an in vitro diagnostic device for use with the bioMérieux VITEK MS or Bruker MALDI Biotyper CA mass spectrometry systems. It automatically picks isolated colonies for further workup and investigations. Colibri can also seed colonies into various size tubes or bottles to prepare McFarland suspensions for AST, verifying opacity of suspensions using the onboard nephelometer. The system applies barcode labels to tubes and prepares purity check plates from these suspensions.

Colibri is paired with COPAN’s artificial intelligence (AI) software, PhenoMATRIX, to offer clinical microbiology laboratories cutting-edge, intelligence driven solutions for specimen workup to help streamline workflow and address the most challenging demands in the laboratory. PhenoMATRIX TAG colony selection software automatically chooses isolated colonies on plated media for picking. By grouping negative cultures, which represent the majority of cultures screened, Microbiologists can quickly review up to 40 plates at a time and batch release negative results quickly. Eliminating the need to review each plate manually, saves precious time and allows technicians to focus on complex cultures which require their unique expertise, and to consult with physicians to provide better patient care.

COPAN also exhibited its UniVerse fully automated instrument for molecular specimen preparation. UniVerse revolutionizes up front sample processing for molecular diagnostics automatically managing accessioning, labeling, vortexing, and aliquoting into assay tubes and 96-well plates. UniVerse is fully LIS interfaced, it increases laboratory throughput with complete traceability, reliability and accuracy. It increases productivity while decreasing operational cost and allows valuable human resources to be re-deployed to higher level tasks.
