Simple Urine Test Helps Track ALS Progression

The continued failure of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) clinical trials and the absence of therapeutic options for this fatal disease have fueled interest in the prospect that biomarkers may hold great promise for advancing therapy development efforts. More...

Immunoproteomics Identifies New Biomarkers for Crohn’s Disease

Using a new screening approach, a study aimed at developing a better blood test for Crohn’s disease (CD) successfully identified several antibodies that could serve as diagnostic markers. More...

Image: The pituitary-specific transcription factor PIT-1 plays an essential role in producing growth hormone (GH), thyroid stimulation hormone (TSH), and prolactin (PRL). Researchers have discovered that a thymoma was detected in examined cases of “anti-PIT-1 antibody syndrome”. PIT-1 expression was abnormally increased within the thymoma and this likely evoked the immune tolerance breakdown and hypopituitarism that occurs in patients with this autoimmune disorder (Photo courtesy of Kobe University).

Autoimmune Disease Trigger Associated with Thymoma Tumors

Researchers have discovered that a newly-identified autoimmune endocrine disease – “Anti-PIT-1 antibody syndrome” – that leads to hypopituitarism is likely caused by overexpression of PIT-1 in the thymoma type of tumor originating from the thymic gland. More...

Image: A diagram of the DiviTum assay: BrdUTP is incorporated into a solid-phase DNA-strand. Incorporated BrdU is detected using an anti-BrdU monoclonal antibody conjugated to the signal generating enzyme alkaline phosphatase. The level of BrdU incorporated over time is proportional to the level of thymidine kinas activity in the sample (Photo courtesy of Biovica).

Biomarker Assay Evaluates Efficacy of Novel Breast Cancer Drug

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women today, affecting approximately 362,000 individuals in the European Union (EU) and 233,000 in the USA each year. Around 1,600 new cases are diagnosed every day and 136,000 deaths occur annually (EU+USA). More...

Increased Immune Reaction Associated with Myeloproliferative Neoplasia

Patients afflicted by myeloproliferative neoplasia, which are a group of chronic malignant bone marrow diseases, bear a mutation in their hematopoietic stem cells. The mutation leads to the bone marrow producing too many blood cells, which thickens the blood. More...

Image: New clues to Nodding syndrome: scientists discovered antibodies to leiomodin-1 (green) inside human brain cells. This study suggests that Nodding syndrome may be an autoimmune disease (Photo courtesy Dr. Avindra Nath, MD).

Nodding Syndrome Linked to Worm Protein

Nodding syndrome is a form of epilepsy that occurs in children between the ages of 5 and 16 who live in distinct regions of Tanzania, Uganda and the Republic of South Sudan. More...

Cytokine Concentration Correlates with Diabetic Nephropathy

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus, and it is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease and inflammation plays some important roles in the pathogenesis of DN. More...
