Powerful Innovations in Diagnostics Unveiled at EuroMedLab 2015

New systems presented by Roche include a new standard for immunology testing, an integrated platform for hematology diagnostics, and a high-throughput analyzer to perform HbA1c tests for blood glucose management. Also, evidence was presented for a high-sensitivity cardiac troponin test to provide earlier and more accurate diagnosis of heart attacks.  More...

Flow Cytometry Simultaneously Detects Immune Complexes Attached to Erythrocytes

Immune complexes attached to erythrocyte membrane are involved in autoimmune hemolytic anemia pathogenesis and currently, direct antiglobulin test is used for AIHA diagnosis, but its performance can vary.  More...

High T-Cell Counts Make Better Match for Stem-Cell Transplants

A simple blood test that measures the T lymphocyte count in donors for stem cell transplants may help identify the best match for patients in need of an allogeneic stem cell transplant.  More...

Gene Mutations Leave Patients Vulnerable to Severe Early Infections

A previously unknown genetic immunodeficiency linked to mutations in a gene deactivates many features of the immune system and leaves affected children open to a unique pattern of aggressive, potentially fatal infections early in life.   More...

Blood Test Identifies Patients Prone to Serious Illness Post-Surgery

A simple blood test can predict with a high degree of accuracy whether a patient is likely to suffer life-threatening complications after major surgery  More...

Image: Illustrated summary of the role of the AIRE gene product and its connection to a group of autoimmune disorders now discovered to be related. The AIRE gene is expressed in a rare population of the thymus, where it is critical for educating immune cells, called T cells, to discriminate between foreign invaders and body’s own proteins. Normally (top) AIRE operates in the form of a complex made up of four identical strands. When both copies of the AIRE gene are mutated (recessive), the resulting complex (middle) is dysfunctional and patients suffer from severe autoimmune disorders. When there are specific mutations in only one copy (dominant, bottom), the protein\'s function can still be disrupted and individuals can develop autoimmune disorders with different levels of severity. Rare Hereditary Autoimmune Disease Found to Have More Common Form

Researchers have discovered that single-allele mutations in the gene that causes recessive autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type-1 can cause a less severe but more common condition. Findings may help identify, diagnose, and treat a number of autoimmune diseases.  More...
