Horizontal Centrifuge Developed for Hospital and Reference Laboratories

A manufacturer and marketer of automated in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) urinalysis systems and medical devices have developed a high speed, horizontal centrifuge for use in hospital and reference laboratories.

Called the StatSpin Express 4, the new centrifuge addresses the increasing demand facing hospital laboratories for more efficient sample processing and rapid turnaround of patient results. It employs a unique horizontal rotor for separating gel tubes in just minutes and replaces larger and slower, batch centrifuges by reducing sample preparation time and streamlining laboratory workflow.

The centrifuge will enable laboratories to meet their "lean” initiatives, a rapidly growing trend in the clinical chemistry laboratory. Lean processing eliminates non-value added steps in a process such as batching and waiting for samples to be processed. With the new centrifuge, laboratories can "go lean”; reducing labor while improving workflow and turnaround time. The unit is designed to handle the demands of central chemistry laboratories where hundreds of runs per day are required.

Manufactured by Iris International's Sampling Processing Division (Westwood, MA, USA), the centrifuge will facilitate the company's entry into the high volume chemistry test market and enable further application expansion in blood and body fluids.

"Samples can be processed as they arrive in the laboratory; no need for batching, no unproductive time waiting for the completion of a long centrifugation cycle. With the Express 4, workflow is streamlined and samples move quickly to the analyzer resulting in faster turnaround of patient results,” said Robert Mello, president of Iris Sample Processing. "In just three minutes, the Express 4 can produce serum or plasma equal to that spun for 10 minutes or more in conventional horizontal centrifuges.”
