Barcode Band Identifies Blood Recipients

By LabMedica International staff writers
Posted on 28 Jul 2010
A blood recipient ID wristband system provides automated patient identification for blood transfusion, specimen collection, and tracking.

The snap closure product enables caregivers and phlebotomists to apply the band to patients quickly, correctly, and securely. It uses serialized barcode ID and alphanumeric codes to match the right patient to the right blood. This improves patient safety by reducing identification-related human errors that can occur during the blood transfusion process.

The system's 12 matching barcode labels (four on the wristband and eight on the detachable tail that is applied to blood tubes) can be applied to additional drawtubes, patient chart, transfusion requisition, and as a secondary label on blood bags. A clear, adhesive shield on the wristband's information area protects the patient ID labels and barcode from moisture or solvents for accurate barcode scanning. Soft, latex-free material that is also durable and strong maximizes patient comfort and safety.

The Securline Bar Code Blood Band was released by Precision Dynamics Corp. (PDC; San Fernando, CA, USA). The product meets current Joint Commission (USA), American Heart Association (AHA), and The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA; USA) requirements.

PDC produces safe ID solutions that provide positive clinical outcomes. Its wristband and label systems are used in hospitals worldwide and they reach every touch point in the delivery of care--from admissions to discharge.
