In a move to strengthen the company's position in the life sciences market, Fisher Scientific International, Inc. (Hampton, NH, USA) has agreed to acquire Perbio Science AB (Helsingborg, Sweden) for about US$714 million.

Perbio manufactures cell-culture and bioresearch products for protein-related research and drug production by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and medical research institutions. The Cell Culture division offers cell nutrition technology, process liquids, and sterile-liquid handling systems under the HyClone brand. The Bioresearch division concentrates on life-science research and drug-discovery tools marketed under the Pierce and Endogen brand names. Fisher Scientific, a manufacturer of laboratory equipment, plans to integrate Perbio's products and services into its global distribution franchise serving 350,000 customers in 145 countries.

"This is a compelling strategic opportunity for Fisher,” said Paul M. Montrone, chairman and CEO of Fisher Scientific. "By acquiring Perbio, we are positioning our company to capitalize on the continuing strong growth in the life-science market, where Perbio is a global leader. With Perbio, we are now positioned to accelerate Fisher's growth in this decade and beyond.”
