Molecular Test Detects Chagas in Blood Donors

The most prevalent parasitic infection in Latin America causes Chagas’ disease. Diagnosis is based on serologic tests because direct detection of Trypanosoma cruzi is very difficult beyond its brief acute phase. More...

Blood Inflammatory Molecules Increased in ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons in brain and spinal cord. Only 5% to 10% of ALS cases are explained by a genetic mutation, while 90% to 95% of cases are sporadic, with no known cause. More...

Immunoassay May Simplify Screening for Liver Cancer

Researchers have developed a highly portable, low-cost immunoassay technology that enables low limits of detection (LoD) by combining solid-phase microextraction membranes, gold nanoparticle labels, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering. Their prototype device successfully measured a liver cancer biomarker at LoD within only ~2 minutes. The team is also working to lower the cost to ~ USD 3 per test. The assay can likely be easily modified to detect infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, and dengue fever. More...

Commercially Available Zika Virus Immunoassays Evaluated

In 2015, the first cases of Zika virus infection were confirmed in Brazil, which indicated the beginning of the largest outbreak recorded with autochthonous vector-borne transmission documented in many countries across the Americas. More...

Vitamin D Affects Circulating T Cells in Children

Vitamin D refers to a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for increasing intestinal absorption of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and zinc and multiple other biological effects. In humans, the most important compounds in this group are vitamin D3 (also known as cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). More...

Immune Infiltration Test Predicts Cancer Relapse Risk

Estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) subtype accounts for about 80% of all breast cancers, the most common cancer in women. At diagnosis, the majority of ER+ patients have a good prognosis if treated with endocrine therapy. More...

Inflammatory Marker Associated with Newborn Amygdala

Maternal inflammation during pregnancy increases the risk for offspring psychiatric disorders and other adverse long-term health outcomes. While changes in the expression of inflammatory markers during a woman's pregnancy may be linked to infection, they can also be associated with other conditions, such as obesity or psychological stress. More...
