Image: Chromatin structure determines the function of the human genome. To visualize chromatin within intact cells, a method called ChromEM stains DNA and paints chromatin with a metal dust. The metal-coated chromatin is imaged by electron microscopy to generate a three-dimensional volume that reveals chromatin structure and organization. A single slice from the three-dimensional volume is shown here. Detailed chromatin structures are seen in a ChromEM stained cell (right panel, dark structures), but not in an unstained cell (left panel) (Photo courtesy of Dr. Clodagh O\'Shea, Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Dr. Mark Ellisman, University of California, San Diego).

Imaging Technique Reveals 3D Structure of DNA and Chromatin

Researchers have developed a method for visualizing the three-dimensional structure of chromatin, which explains how the two meter long molecular chain of genomic DNA fits inside the nuclei of human cells. More...

Study Shows Curcumin Kills Childhood Neuroblastoma Cells

Treatment-resistant human childhood neuroblastoma tumor cells growing in culture were targeted and destroyed by the natural anti-cancer agent curcumin, which had been delivered to the cells via a novel class of cerium oxide nanoparticles. More...

Gene Editing Prevents Onset of Retinal Angiogenesis

Eye disease researchers demonstrated in a mouse model that delivery of the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing tool via a viral vector could prevent the onset of angiogenesis, which causes vision loss and blindness and is a feature of several degenerative eye conditions including proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Biodegradable Flu Booster Enhances Vaccine Effectiveness

A booster immunization administered via a novel biodegradable microneedle patch was found to significantly bolster the effectiveness of seasonal influenza vaccination, even providing some protection against of strains of the virus not included in the primary vaccine cocktail. More...

Image: Microscopy images taken of Zika-infected primate placenta samples that were stained to detect Zika by immunohistochemistry. The left image shows a sample treated with the EASE protocol, with red/orange colored signals of Zika infection clearly visible (white arrows). The right image shows a sample treated with a standard protocol, and Zika virus - though present - was not detected (Photo courtesy of the University of Washington).

Horseradish Complex Increases Sensitivity of Immunochemical Assays

A new technique boosts the sensitivity of immunochemical reactions that rely on the enzyme horseradish peroxidase from 100 to 1,000 times. More...
