A new cryogenic storage solution provides more reliable biobanking of samples while reducing space utilization.

Greiner Bio-One (Kremsmuenster, Austria), a technology partner for the diagnostic, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries, is expanding its product portfolio to include a solution for high-throughput sample storage in automated storage systems. At Analytica 2014 (April 1-4, Munich, Germany), Greiner Bio-One GmbH (Frickenhausen, Germany), division of Greiner Bio-One, will be presenting this solution for valuable sample storage in biorepositories using the new "Cryo.s" biobanking tubes. Cryo.s tubes feature a 30% reduction in height as compared to standard cryo tubes, allowing for a more optimized utilization of available space in deep freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks. Thus, Cryo.s tubes also contribute to substantial savings on energy consumption and costs for equipment and maintenance.

Made of medical-grade polymer with proven low content of leachables and an optimized screw-cap design with silicon gasket, Cryo.s tubes are ideal for storage over long periods at extremely low temperatures, such as in gas phase over liquid nitrogen. Both features minimize risk of sample contamination or sample loss over time.

The new tubes are available in volumes of 300 µl, 600 µl, and 1,000 µl, and are supplied in automation-friendly cryo racks. Equipped with decapper-friendly screw caps, they can be opened and closed with automated equipment. Furthermore, a unique datamatrix code on the tubes guarantees for machine-assisted, error-proof identification of individual samples, making Cryo.s tubes well suited also for automated processing of large sample quantities.
