A 300-meter conveyor system is expected to double the processing capacity of a pathology lab.

ARUP Laboratories (Salt Lake City, UT, USA) an enterprise of the University of Utah and a national clinical and anatomic pathology reference laboratory, has chosen the MagneMover LITE (MM LITE) intelligent transport system, developed and produced by MagneMotion (Devens, MA, USA), to replace its existing automation system.

The approximately 300-meter long MM LITE conveyor system will utilize 500 MM LITE motors and will provide the speed and precision to double ARUP’s current throughput capacity for samples processed on a daily basis. MagneMotion has begun delivering key parts of the system, which is scheduled to be operational by 2014.

“ARUP has a vision for implementing best-in-class automation as part of this major lab upgrade at their campus in Salt Lake City. MagneMotion was thrilled to be chosen to provide a key element of that world-leading automation capability with our MagneMover LITE intelligent transport system,” stated Peter Mattila, MagneMotion VP of Sales and Marketing.

“MagneMotion’s MM LITE system is highly advanced,” stated Heidi Kildee, Project Manager, Automation Projects, ARUP Laboratories; “The systems speed, ease of use, and continuous tracking of samples were all factors that led to ARUP choosing this product. In addition, the modularity of [this] system gives us flexibility for future growth.”

Dr. Charles Hawker, Scientific Director, Automation and Special Projects, ARUP Laboratories, presented details of the new system at the eighth Cherry Blossom Symposium on Clinical Laboratory Automation in Seoul (South Korea) on April 12, 2012.
