Super Corrected Microscope Objective Useful for Imaging Inter/Intracellular Specimens

A super corrected 60x, numerical aperture (NA) 1.4 microscope objective lens delivers optimal levels of performance using light at wavelengths of 405 nm - 650 nm. It will be useful for cell biologists, neuroscientists and others who use lasers for imaging inter- and intracellular detail in biological specimens.

The PLAPON60XOSC Olympus (Center Valley, PA, USA) lens provides for under 0.1 µm - 0.2 µm of chromatic aberration when working with lasers from 405 nm up to 650 nm. Most other comparable objectives only deliver their optimal performance down to around 435 nm.

The improvement in chromatic aberration produces very high color fidelity at the shortest wavelengths commonly used, allowing reliable colocalization and three-dimensional microstructure studies. Other aberrations are also very much reduced. Images down to 405 nm benefit from highly improved optical performance with better flatness; shadowed areas at the periphery of the image are virtually eliminated, resulting in a bright, crisp image from edge to edge. In addition, the objective provides excellent near-infrared fluorescence imaging up to 850 nm.

The new objective has a working distance of 0.12 mm and a field number of 22. Olympus technology helps provide an enhanced point spread function for confocal imaging at low ultraviolet wavelengths with enhanced flatness and improved brightness out to the periphery of the field. It is designed to be used with an appropriate cover glass and immersion oil. The objective can also be adapted for use with differential interference contrast (DIC).

The objective is constructed using the company's proprietary lead-free ECO glass materials as part of the Olympus worldwide commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its operations and products.
