A microplate sealer provides enhanced comfort and safety in use and repeatability in sealing plates of many different types and sizes.

Building on the performance record of Porvair Sciences, Ltd.'s ( Leatherhead, UK) MiniSeal microplate sealer--the MiniSeal Plus is a new cost-effective, semiautomatic thermal microplate sealer. Designed for laboratories needing to seal small to medium numbers (10-50) of plates each day, the MiniSeal Plus is compact, easy to use, and simple to install. Unlike bigger automated sealers, MiniSeal Plus does not require a compressed air supply to operate. Instead, all operations are electronically controlled through the splash-proof keypad, meaning the MiniSeal Plus can be installed, up to temperature, and sealing plates within minutes of unpacking. The compact footprint (height 310 mm, depth 275 mm, width 181 mm) means MiniSeal Plus will fit just about anywhere on the lab bench, or inside a fume hood if required.

Rapid heat-up, real-time display of sealing head temperature, automatic plate height detection, and pre-cut sealing films combine for simple and convenient plate sealing. The proprietary microplate insertion "drawer" design ensures quiet operation and eliminates any health and safety risks, while an energy-saving mode protects the environment. Full microprocessor control allows the user to program the optimal sealing time and temperature for each plate type in use, while preventing damage caused by "oversealing."

The MiniSeal Plus can be used with any ANSI/SBS standard footprint plate up to 48 mm high and with most currently available polymerase chain reaction (PCR) plates. Adaptors may be required for operation with certain types of plates. Sealing can be achieved with plates formed from polystyrene, polypropylene, and the new COC/COP (cyclo-olefin polymers). Sealing films come in a range of materials suitable for storage, transport, and temporary or long-term sealing and piercing.
