Siemens Healthineers and Novo Collaborate to Expand Access to Noninvasive Liver Testing

Metabolic dysfunction‑associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its progressive form, metabolic dysfunction‑associated steatohepatitis (MASH), affect millions and are linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Because disease often progresses silently, many patients miss the window for reversal and present with fibrosis. A new collaboration now targets earlier, non‑invasive assessment and wider access to blood‑based testing.

Siemens Healthineers and Novo will work to raise disease awareness, support earlier assessment, and expand access to non‑invasive testing. The effort addresses persistent identification gaps and aims to make MASH evaluation more accessible and actionable. Liver health experts emphasize identifying disease before fibrosis and serious complications in at‑risk patients.

Central to the effort is the Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test, a non‑invasive blood test for liver assessment. ELF is the first and only test authorized in the United States to help assess risk of disease progression in patients with advanced fibrosis due to MASH and to support patient management decisions. It is widely available through national laboratory providers, is billed under Category 1 CPT code 81517, and its results are not impacted by body mass index.

“Too often, liver health flies under the radar. People deserve the same level of awareness as for other major diseases, creating a better opportunity to intervene before serious complications develop,” said Michele Zwickl, head of Laboratory Solutions for Siemens Healthineers North America.

“Earlier triage is one of the most important opportunities to improve the future of MASH care. Our collaboration recognizes that patients, clinicians, laboratories, health systems, and industry partners all have a role to play in creating a more effective pathway for liver disease assessment and management,” stated Michelle Long, senior international medical director for MASH at Novo.
