Urine Specimen Collection System Improves Diagnostic Accuracy and Efficiency
Posted on 26 Feb 2026
Urine testing is a critical, non-invasive diagnostic tool used to detect conditions such as pregnancy, urinary tract infections, metabolic disorders, cancer, and kidney disease. However, contaminated or improperly collected urine samples can lead to incorrect results, delayed care, or inappropriate treatment. One study found that nearly 44 percent of patients with contaminated urine cultures received unnecessary antibiotic therapy, highlighting the clinical impact of preanalytical errors. Now, a newly introduced three-tube urine collection system aims to preserve specimen integrity, reduce contamination risk,s and enable broader testing from a single sample, minimizing repeat collections and improving workflow efficiency.
BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA) has launched the BD Vacutainer Urine Complete Cup Kit that preserves specimen quality, streamlines testing, and helps reduce repeat collections to support better patient care. Designed as a closed-system, the three-tube collection solution expands testing capabilities from one urine specimen while supporting automated laboratory workflows.
The kit includes a sterile urine cup with an integrated transfer device, a tube for culture and sensitivity testing to detect bacteria or fungi, a tube for urinalysis to assess general health and disease markers, a discard tube without additives, and a castile wipe for patient preparation. The innovative third-tube design allows clinicians to perform additional testing without manually transferring urine or collecting a new specimen.
The kit supports broader diagnostic evaluation while reducing healthcare worker exposure and lowering contamination risks associated with manual transfers. Enabling multiple tests from a single collection, it helps decrease the likelihood of repeat patient sampling and associated workflow disruptions. Closed-system solutions such as those in the BD Vacutainer Urine Collection portfolio are intended to minimize preanalytical errors and improve the reliability of laboratory results. The system is available in the United States with both Hemogard and conventional stoppered tubes and is compatible with a wide range of diagnostic equipment.
By streamlining specimen management, the collection kit is designed to enhance diagnostic accuracy and support timely treatment decisions. It can be integrated into existing laboratory processes and automated workflows, helping healthcare facilities improve efficiency across the urine specimen management continuum. The expanded testing capability from a single specimen can reduce contamination-related errors and unnecessary antibiotic use, contributing to safer and more effective patient care.
"Improving diagnostic accuracy starts long before a sample reaches the lab," said Bridget Bagnato, worldwide president of Specimen Management at BD. "This kit reflects the innovation we deliver to help clinicians determine effective treatment options through more accurate diagnosis and ultimately support better patient management."
