Specialized Stain Enables Exceptional Bone Marrow Diagnostic Pathology

A new tissue stain has been specially developed to provide superior clarity of differentiation and detail in bone marrow tissue samples for disease diagnosis.

Dako (Glostrup, Denmark), an Agilent Technologies (Santa Clara, CA, USA) company, has now added its new Jenner-Wright Giemsa stain to Dako's broad palette of automated stains – its Artisan Link portfolio. Dako is releasing the stain in its continuing mission to provide pathology labs with the most advanced special stain solutions and the broadest portfolio.

The Jenner-Wright Giemsa stain is designed to give pathologists an added dimension to the visualization of the cell morphology by providing clear differentiation and detail of hematopoietic cells in bone marrow samples for the diagnosis of diseases, such as cancer, aplastic anemia, and myelofibrosis.

The Artisan portfolio provides the broadest range of automated special stains available—currently consisting of 31 high-quality stains, covering most of a typical laboratory’s special stain needs. Dako also plans to add more stains to the portfolio.

The portfolio also enables labs to take advantage of the productivity benefits possible through automation with the Artisan Link Pro instrument. Laboratories that routinely do special stains will benefit from a 64% reduction in hands-on time with Artisan Link Pro, compared with the same protocols performed manually. Significant gains in lab safety can be realized because the Artisan Link Pro and its ready-to-use reagents are closed, minimizing exposure to hazardous chemicals, and can be connected to ventilation systems. The instrument also features a unique waste separation system that reduces hazardous waste generation, helping labs minimize disposal and associated costs.

"Dako’s Jenner-Wright Giemsa special stain for bone marrow is excellent, and allows us, for the first time, to automate the diagnosis of various diseases using bone marrow tissue," said Prof. Hermann Herbst, director of the Vivantes Pathology Department in Berlin. "Artisan Link Pro stains are fabulous to look at. This stain in particular offers an unprecedented ability to use bone marrow and provides exceptionally clear differentiation and detail."
