The 2013 version of the main exam for progress monitoring and for evaluating and establishing training standards in pathology across Europe is now available.

As of November 25, the 2013 EUROPALS annual pathology test is now available, offered by the European Society of Pathology (ESP) in close collaboration with the European Association of Pathology Chairs & Program Directors (EAPCP). The 2013 test coordinator is Prof. Dr. Fred T. Bosman. It is especially intended for trainees but all ESP member pathologists are free to participate.

The test consists of 100 questions, partly straight, multiple choice questions, partly still-image based and partly virtual-slide based, and extended matching questions. The chosen level is that of a trainee at the end of a residency program. The test comprises of questions with a purely diagnostic orientation, molecular pathology test items, and mechanism of disease-oriented questions.

The test is preferably to be done in one run but can be done in parts if needed. It generally takes approximately 2–2.5 hours in total. A score result will be provided to the test-taker immediately upon completion of the exam. The test is formative—a tool for self-assessment. The results are kept anonymous.

The exam can be taken by logging on to the online (please see Related Links below) with one’s own password; for those without a password, one can be obtained on the website. All existing users are requested to update their Year of Training and Country from “My Account -> Your Details” once logged into PathXL.
