FDA Clears Compact Molecular COVID Test for Decentralized Care Settings
Posted on 18 Sep 2026
Decentralized healthcare settings such as urgent care clinics have historically struggled to deploy high-performance molecular testing. Barriers include high upfront costs, fixed testing capacity, large instrument footprints, and workflow complexity. A newly FDA-cleared test now offers a hand-held platform that delivers higher analytical sensitivity and faster COVID results for both over-the-counter and professional use.
Aptitude Medical Systems’ (Goleta, CA, USA) next-generation Metrix COVID Test has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance, the company’s first traditional clearance for the Metrix molecular diagnostics platform. Development was supported by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). Aptitude’s next-generation Metrix COVID/Flu Test is also under FDA review for 510(k) clearance, continuing the transition of its respiratory portfolio from emergency authorization to traditional clearance.
Metrix is a compact, hand-held molecular platform designed to make high-performance testing more accessible in decentralized care. It is cleared for both over-the-counter and professional use in CLIA-waived settings. The system is engineered for rapid results with simple workflows and a small footprint suited to urgent care and similar sites.
The updated Metrix COVID Test delivers approximately three-fold greater analytical sensitivity than the original Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) product and provides results about 30% faster. The platform is broadly available through major distributors in collaboration with Sekisui Diagnostics, and the company does not anticipate disruption during the upcoming respiratory season. Consistent with FDA transition policies, previously distributed EUA-authorized Metrix products may continue to be used through their labeled expiration dates.
This regulatory transition is occurring as COVID-19 EUA declarations for medical devices are scheduled to terminate on December 26, 2026, per the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Aptitude is also expanding the Metrix menu, with additional products targeting respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Streptococcus, and sexually transmitted infections in late-stage development or under review. Over the past year, hundreds of clinics have adopted the platform, reflecting rapid uptake in urgent care.
“We're continually developing Metrix to make it better. FDA clearance is an important step, not a stopping point. We continue to push the Metrix platform forward with faster tests, better performance, simpler operations, and a broader menu for our growing customer base,” said JP Wang, co-CEO of Aptitude.
“The opportunity is much larger than replacing existing molecular systems. By removing the economic and operational barriers that have historically limited molecular testing, Metrix can bring molecular diagnostics into healthcare settings where it previously wasn't practical. We believe Metrix can fundamentally expand where and how molecular testing is used,” said Scott Ferguson, co-CEO of Aptitude.
