Multiplex PCR Panel Promises Faster Answers for GI Infections

Gastrointestinal infections are a major global health burden, with an estimated 179 million cases of acute gastroenteritis each year in the United States. Caused by diverse pathogens—including bacteria, viruses, and parasites—these infections often present with overlapping symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever, complicating diagnosis.
Rapid and accurate pathogen identification is essential for guiding treatment in high-risk patients and limiting outbreaks in healthcare and community settings. A new multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) gastrointestinal panel has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance, enabling single-sample detection of common bacterial, viral, and parasitic causes on Cepheid’s GeneXpert platform.
Cepheid’s Xpert GI Panel is a multiplex PCR assay that targets 11 clinically significant gastrointestinal pathogens from one patient specimen. The cartridge-based test runs on GeneXpert systems and is designed to streamline stool pathogen detection by consolidating multiple analyses into a single, automated workflow.
The assay processes stool collected in Cary-Blair transport media and reports results in approximately 74 minutes, with less than one minute of hands-oxn time. It opeartes on GeneXpert instrument systems equipped or upgraded with ten color modules, a configuration that supports concurrent detection of more than ten pathogens or biomarkers. By integrating sample preparation, amplification, and detection, the panel is intended to improve workflow efficiency for clinical laboratories.
The clearance comes as traditional stool culture workflows remain labor‑intensive and time‑consuming, with known limitations in identifying co‑infections or low‑abundance organisms. Multiplex molecular testing provides an alternative by simultaneously interrogating multiple targets, supporting faster clinical decisions.
