Cronobacter Sakazakii Isolation Kits Reduce Need for Subculture and Confirmatory Tests

A range of microbiologic media has been developed that provides a choice of products to meet all the recognized requirements for the culture and isolation of Cronobacter sakazakii.

The products will be a major focus at Medica 2009, held November 18-21, 2009, in Düsseldorf, Germany. Lab M's (Bury, Lancashire, UK) expanding Harlequin brand chromogenic media, which includes two of the three C. sakazakii products, will also be on display. In addition, there will be the first news of selected products launching in 2010.

A foodborne pathogen, C. sakazakii, is associated with sporadic cases and outbreaks of meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sepsis, particularly in newborns. The three key media for its isolation and identification are all available from Lab M and meet the need for simplified methods of testing: Harlequin CSIM--Cronobacter sakazakii Isolation Medium (ISO); CSEB--Cronobacter sakazakii enrichment broth (ISO); and Harlequin CSA-DFI (differential fluorescence induction)--Cronobacter sakazakii agar-DFI formulation.

Harlequin CSA-DFI--Cronobacter sakazakii agar--DFI formulation is one of the most recent additions to Lab M's Harlequin range of chromogenic media. Developed to improve the isolation and identification of a variety of microorganisms, Harlequin media can help reduce the need for subculture and confirmatory biochemical tests. The range also includes media for Listeria monocytogenes isolation, the enumeration of coliforms, and Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Salmonella species isolation.

Lab M specializes in the development and production of microbiologic diagnostic products.
