Hospital-acquired infections (HAI) account for thousands of deaths annually. These nosocomial infections are an inherent part of the healthcare system, pushing researchers to focus on ways to increase speed of diagnosis and prevent fatalities from the infections, according to new research by Kalorama Information (Rockville, MD, USA).

The focus on diagnostics for rapid discovery of HAI is driving the market, which is expected to cause an upswing in HAI testing and treatment products. In 2010, this market was worth US$9 billion and, it is forecast to reach $10.3 billion by 2015.

"The growth opportunities are in testing," said Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information. "The treatment market is slowing down, with a little growth in the future, which will be dominated by established pharmaceutical companies.” "Everyone is interested in faster tests and immediate results," added Carlson. "Although the rate of infection won't change, quicker turnover will improve patient outcome and drive down mortality rates."
