A company that manufactures precision machines for producing test strips for glucose, cholesterol, pregnancy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and toxin testing has integrated new software.

Kinematic Automation (Twain Harte, CA, USA) produces a wide range of equipment used in the manufacture of medical and diagnostic devices. These systems treat, slice, and package test strips at rates of up to 50 strips per second each, with approximately 8 billion produced per year.

The machines can have 5,000 parts and have been redesigned using Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp., (Concord, Massachusetts, USA) software. The new machines shorten the time to market by 30% to 40%, reduce development cost by 25%, and cut scrap and rework cost by 50%.

The manufacturing company has also implemented data management software from Dassault Systèmes to automate the engineering change order (ECO) workflow and render it paperless. The company will save time, money, and labor by automation of this previously tedious process.

Patrick Grimes, the mechanical design engineer involved in the project at Kinematic, said, "It is vital to be first to market with the most reliable, serviceable, and highest-quality machines. The new software helps us achieve these goals by enabling us to quickly model designs, communicate our intent to customers, make the necessary changes, and collaborate with our manufacturing team.” He also opined that they were competing against diseases that can be halted, reversed, or managed with the help of the proper diagnostics and SolidWorks is a critical ingredient in their life-saving mission.
