Appalachian Electronic Instruments, Inc. (AEI, Fairlea, WV, USA), has announced the acquisition of the assets of Norgren Systems (Ronceverte, WV, USA), a developer of laboratory-automation equipment. Financial details were not disclosed.

AEI manufactures electro-mechanical systems for medical devices as well as for the mining and textile industries. With the acquisition of Norgren Systems, AEI has entered the pharmaceutical/biotechnology field.

"AEI's 50-year history, business-acquisition experience, and complete in-house manufacturing and machining resources, backed by our longstanding reputation of reliability, integrity, and commitment, will enable Norgren Systems to offer select high quality products to the life sciences industry” said Larry Nickell, AEI's president.

Norgren Systems develops laboratory-automation equipment primarily for protein research, including ultra-high-speed colony pickers and colony spreaders. Its products are currently being used by pharmaceutical companies and university research laboratories. Norgren also provides the life sciences market with personalized product services. The company has received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to develop a new product solution for an emerging pharmaceutical company.

Larry Nickell concluded, "Some companies may not have the budget, space, or people to develop and service their products. Norgren Systems develops strategic partnerships with these companies, ultimately utilizing AEI's resources to bring their products to market.”

AEI will continue to offer the brands and products of Norgren Systems and will immediately add third-party services such as contract field service, warranty service, contract manufacturing, and redesign services. Norgren Systems will operate out of AEI's Fairlea (WV) headquarters.
