A new POC allergy test is designed for use in decentralized settings and can provide a fast result within 20 minutes. It is able to provide an allergy diagnosis at the first physician visit.

Called the ImmunoCAP Rapid, the test is very simple to use. It requires only a small blood sample taken from the finger to aid the diagnosis "allergy or not." The test result will provide an answer if the patient is allergic to any of the ten most common inhalant allergens such as house-dust mite.

Phadia (Uppsala, Sweden), a leading company in allergy diagnostics has been granted clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA; Rockville, MD, USA) to sell and market its new ImmunoCAP Rapid product in US. "This is a historical event in the diagnostic industry since it is the first semiquantitative POC allergy test that has been cleared by the FDA. It is a major milestone for Phadia in building the ImmunoCAP franchise even stronger and will provide more patients with allergy-like symptoms the possibility to get a correct diagnosis" said Håkan Englund, executive vice president Phadia AB.

ImmunoCAP Rapid will be introduced on the United States market in 2009. The European version of ImmunoCAP Rapid has been marketed and sold in selected European countries for over 2 years.

Phadia develops, manufactures and markets blood test systems to support the clinical diagnosis and monitoring of allergy, asthma, and autoimmune diseases.
