The new POC transfusion safety-management system is composed of computers, a software application, wireless handheld barcode scanners, and wireless printers. In addition to helping laboratory personnel in the accurate matching of blood samples with correct blood or blood products, it enables immediate documentation of any adverse reaction data.
A product of IntelliDOT Corp. (San Diego, CA, USA), the management system is called the IntelliDOT blood product administration (IntelliDOT BPA). The company announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA; Rockville, MD, USA) granted 510(k) clearance for the IntelliDOT BPA for commercial sale.
"The FDA approval for IntelliDOT blood product administration advances our corporate mission to provide innovative and easy-to-adopt, point-of-care solutions to enhance patient safety, improve nurse efficiency, and help hospitals reduce risk and liability,” said Thomas G. Klopack, president and CEO of IntelliDOT. "With this latest addition, IntelliDOT extends its ability to support improved quality of care across the full spectrum of patient needs.”
IntelliDOT BPA is an integrated module of the IntelliDOT CAREt system, the manager that connects caregivers with the information systems they need at the point-of-care. The other currently available modules in the CAREt system include: IntelliDOT bedside medication administration, IntelliDOT phlebotomy specimen collection, IntelliDOT mother-baby breast milk matching, and IntelliDOT vital signs collection.
IntelliDOT is a provider of wireless, handheld, barcode point-of- care (BPOC) solutions that connect to any healthcare information system to improve patient safety and nurse workflow. When using the IntelliDOT system, nurses can easily manage all tasks associated with medication-administration safety checks and related documentation.
