A cassette-based blood gas analyzer developed for point-of-care gives healthcare professionals more time for patient care by providing the fast blood gas results. Posted on 24 May 2010
The analyzer takes 35 seconds to perform a test on a comprehensive acute care panel with 17 parameters. This is about a third of the time spent on testing with other analyzers. Fast test results shorten the time needed before an accurate diagnosis can be made and the correct medical treatment initiated.
The ABL90 FLEX is a compact solution and weighs only 11 kg. It is portable or can be placed on a rolling stand so that the caregivers can perform the test and diagnose the patient close to the bedside, thus providing better outcomes. Resulting clinical benefits are reductions of in-patient days and treatment costs. Tests can be performed on the following parameters: blood gas, oximetry, electrolyte, and metabolite values.
With a turnaround time of 60 seconds, the instrument's time waiting is reduced between tests and this helps to avoid queues for the analyzer. A blood sample of only 6.5 µL is required to perform a blood gas analysis on the full panel, making it suitable for neonatal patients.
The ABL90 FLEX, Radiometer's (Copenhagen, Denmark) new, next-generation blood gas analyzer, was awarded the Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA) for 2010 in recognition of a design that innovates the face of healthcare as we know it today.
"The goal with the ABL90 FLEX has always been to create a product that would enable caregivers to spend less time on testing and more on patient care. Design and functionality have played a pivotal role in making that a reality for our users, and we are truly happy to have these efforts recognized,” said Radiometer president, Peter Kürstein.
Radiometer, which is a part of the U.S.-based Danaher Corp., develops, manufactures, and distributes technologically advanced acute care testing solutions. The company's products and services simplify and automate all phases of acute care testing.
