Testing Breaks Down 22 Components of Cholesterol in Single Test

A new cholesterol test reports 22 separate components of cholesterol in a single test, including Lp(a), apoB, apoAI, and the apoB/apoAI ratio, at no additional cost, which saves healthcare dollars and maximizes risk identification. The new test also identifies markers of metabolic syndrome, frequently associated with early diabetes.

Atherotech, Inc. (Birmingham, AL, USA) presented its VAP cholesterol test at Internal Medicine 2010, the annual scientific meeting of the American College of Physicians (ACP) April 22-24, 2010, in Toronto, Canada. "The VAP cholesterol test is gaining momentum as the preferred lipid test,” said Atherotech chief medical officer Michael E. Cobble, M.D. "Internal Medicine 2010 attendees will learn how we're complementing our VAP test with the addition of cardiometabolic and genetic testing, giving physicians and cardiology practices a single source for multiple test panels.”

Atherotech provides physicians with a single source for the VAP cholesterol test and more than a dozen cardiovascular and metabolic tests. Cardiometabolic testing available through Atherotech includes C-reactive protein (hsCRP), LpPLA2, ApoE genotype, NT-proBNP, cystatin-C, T3 and T4 when thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is abnormal, plus gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), a recognized cardiovascular risk biomarker.

Unlike the standard lipid profile, the VAP test directly measures low-density lipoprotein (LDL); therefore fasting is not required.

Atherotech is a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-certified clinical reference laboratory and cardiodiagnostic company focusing on cardiometabolic tests. The VAP test is the first cholesterol profile to comply with updated U.S. National Cholesterol Education Program ATP III recommendations for direct LDL measurement, which is accurate with nonfasting samples. It is the only advanced lipid profile that routinely reports all three lipoprotein parameters considered necessary by the American Diabetes Association and American College of Cardiology expert consensus guidelines.
