A multi-year agreement to develop and market a novel microfluidics instrument system has been announced by Caliper Technologies Corp. (Mountain View, CA, USA) and Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (Hercules, CA, USA).

Caliper, an expert on microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technology, creates commercial products that enable users to automate, integrate, and miniaturize multiple experimental steps on a small chip, with potential applications in diagnostics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. Bio-Rad is a leading provider of tools and services for the global diagnostic and life sciences research markets. Under the terms of the agreement, Caliper will receive research and development funding from Bio-Rad, will receive royalties on future sales of instruments and software, and will be the exclusive manufacturer of LabChip devices.

"This collaboration with Bio-Rad, a leading and highly successful supplier of life science and clinical diagnostic products, represents Caliper's ideal OEM (original equipment manufacturer) relationship,” said Michael Knapp, Ph.D., CEO of Caliper. "By applying our technology and expertise to new market opportunities, we are expanding the overall commercial potential for our microfluidic LabChip products.”

Caliper's LabChip technology embodies proven methods of materials science, fluid dynamics, surface chemistries, assay development, software and hardware engineering, and manufacturing derived from the microchip industry to provide miniature, integrated chemical, biochemical, and cellular processing systems.
