Analyzer Shows Drug Effects on Cells

An instrument called the IN Cell Analyzer enables researchers to look inside living cells and evaluate directly the effects of a drug compound on the cellular process in real-time.

Testing at the cellular level allows researchers to know earlier in the process the potential adverse interactions the drug may have in clinical trials. The technology permits sub-cellular imaging and the analysis of nearly 400 assays in as little as 15 minutes and of more than 10,000 cellular images in eight hours. At the heart of the analyzer system is a proprietary, laser-based, confocal imaging system that includes three high-speed cameras.

"We have been working with the IN Cell Analyzer for several months, and we have been very impressed by its powerful cellular imaging capabilities and sophisticated software tools,” said Elaine Sullivan, Ph.D., director of The Advanced Science and Technology Laboratory at AstraZeneca.

The IN Cell Analyzer was developed by Amersham Biosciences (Piscataway, NJ, USA). The company says the analyzer will enable pharmaceutical companies to bring new drugs to market faster and thereby make them less expensive for consumers.
