A strategic alliance to combine their technologies and create new bioassay systems has been announced by Tecan (Zurich, Switzerland) and Luminex Corp. (Austin, TX, USA). The alliance plans to couple the xMap technology of Luminex with the automation products of Tecan.

Luminex's open platform xMap system is a proprietary technology that performs up to 100 assays simultaneously on a single drop of fluid with the capability for both medium- and high-throughput assay applications. The xMap system combines the use of low-cost microsphere-based assays with small lasers, digital signal processors, and software to offer speed, precision, and flexibility.

The initial phase of the collaboration will focus on developing software and hardware components necessary to integrate the xMap technology with Tecan's biorobotic liquid handling instrumentation and sample preparation systems. The second phase will involve a nonexclusive comarketing agreement, under which the two companies will market the combined systems.

"By collaborating with a world leader in liquid handling and sample preparation, we can offer a total bioassy solution to a broad range of customers, including the highest throughput laboratories,” said Gail S. Page, executive vice president of Luminex.
