Latest Real-Time PCR System Incorporates Innovative Glass Fiber Optics

The newest 96-well format Real Time PCR instrument is now available for genomics and genetics researchers.

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a key technology in life science research and molecular diagnostics in which a segment of nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) is copied or “amplified” so that it can be more readily analyzed. Real-time PCR is a modification of standard PCR and provides greater accuracy in applications such as the quantification of gene expression, proteins, viruses, and bacteria in human, food, and soil samples, and for analysis of mutations (SNP), detection of gene modified organisms (GMO), and forensic testing. The process involves cycles of alternative heating and cooling of a small sample containing the nucleic acid. Throughout this process, copies of targeted DNA molecules are produced and the amount of the amplified DNA is measured during the PCR process in real-time. This ensures very accurate and precise quantification of the nucleic acid.

The new instrument – the Roche (Basel, Switzerland) LightCycler 96 system – incorporates innovative glass fiber optics capable of equal and simultaneous data capture from all 96 wells, while avoiding the signal variations commonly seen in systems that use optical scanning. The instrument is described as being highly accurate, reproducible, and capable of fast data generation. In addition, the LightCycler 96 is calibration- free, as it does not require a passive reference dye.

“The LightCycler 96 System reflects more than a decade of Roche expertise and continuous innovation in PCR technology and brings the high quality and reliability of our PCR systems within the reach of every researcher,” said Gerd Haberhausen, head of qPCR and sample preparation systems at Roche. “The instrument’s new silver block ensures outstanding temperature homogeneity and therefore enables a maximum of data consistency and accuracy. In addition, the new Light Cycler 96 puts the user right at the center by providing highly intuitive, user-friendly software and interfaces.”
