BioTek Instruments, Inc. (BioTek; Winooski, VT, USA), a microplate instrumentation, automation, and software developer, has announced receipt of European Patent EP 2 093 572 B, which covers the ultrasonic cleaning and maintenance feature used in the company’s microplate washers.

The high-performance cleaning technology, known as Ultrasonic Advantage, is incorporated into the majority of BioTek's microplate washers, including the 405 Touch, 405 LS, Elx405 Select Deep Well Microplate Washers, and the EL406 Microplate Washer Dispenser. Easily operable and cost-effective, the company’s microplate washers incorporate technology that allows for both strip washing and full plate washing in a full range of configurations.

Using ultrasonic sound waves, Ultrasonic Advantage eliminates residue attached on the mircroplate as well as reduces salt crystal build-up and protein, which contributes to assay failure. The feature may be initiated from the washer's keypad interface or optional Liquid Handling Control software for unattended washer manifold maintenance.

BioTek provides innovative instruments and testing products that help accelerate life science research, as well as offers solutions for the hospital safety and quality assurance markets.

Patent for Ultrasonic Advantage is pending in the United States.
