A fully customizable plate mover module extends the functionality and versatility of liquid handling systems used in biotech, drug discovery, and other life science research and production laboratories.

The Thermo Scientific (Milford, MA, USA) Orbitor BenchTrak module was made to interface with the already well-established Orbitor RS plate mover system.

The Orbitor RS is a high-speed microplate mover offering proven, reliable performance with flexible plate handling. Extensive vertical reach allows multiple stacked or high-density instruments to be loaded in a small footprint, and a bidirectional telescoping arm provides superior reach, improved user safety, and unlimited base rotations within a 360 degree workspace. The Orbitor RS is equipped with integrated storage for 72 plates, and its adaptable design expands to accommodate up to 360 plates. A collision and plate sensing mechanism automatically shuts down the system if the mover senses contact.

The new Orbitor BenchTrak significantly extends the functionality and versatility of Orbitor RS, providing a fully customizable automation solution that fits into existing laboratory space. BenchTrak comprises a range of “click-in” components, such as instrument loading platforms, mezzanines, guarding and microplate stores that can be easily incorporated to address almost any customer workflow requirement.

The Orbitor Benchtrak is operated via PC using Thermo Scientific’s Momentum Three software, which enables users to configure it for a wide variety of benchtop workflows including sample preparation, ELISA, nucleic acid and protein purification, cell or biochemical assays, qPCR and next-generation sequencing. The new Thermo Scientific LOCaMotion touch screen teaching wizard guides users through the configuration process.

The Orbitor BenchTrak is available for both new systems and field upgrades for existing Orbitor RS workstations, enabling systems to grow with the laboratory needs.
