A dedicated analyzer designed to provide a safe and reliable means for determining the chemical and biochemical parameters generated during fermenter growth of bacterial or mammalian cell cultures is now available for biotech and life science researchers.

The new Cedex Bio Bioprocess Analyzer is being marketed by Roche (Basel, Switzerland), one of the world’s largest producers of scientific instruments.

Cedex is a compact desktop system designed to fulfill the essential needs for metabolite screening and substrate analysis of bioprocesses. It is able to perform photometric and electrolyte testing of up to 14 parameters simultaneously (out of 28 programmable tests) per sample. The instrument is easy to operate, enabling continuous loading and unloading of diverse cup types as well as having on-board dilution capability for highly concentrated samples.

The system is based on Roche’s well-known “cobas” technology and has built-in programs for the determination of glucose, lactate, LDH, ammonia, Na+, K+, glutamine, and glutamate. New parameters can be implemented by “plug and play,“ and a development channel for individual assay customization is planned.

“Bioprocess analytics are performed throughout the process from cell line development to large scale manufacturing of commercialized therapeutics. The majority of testing takes place during the upscale from plate-size to preclinical or early clinical studies supply – this is where the Cedex Bio Bioprocess Analyzer fits in perfectly. It is an accurate and reliable tool, providing bioprocess metabolite profiling, which is critical for the optimal production of biotherapeutics,” said Thomas Baier, head of global marketing for Roche Applied Science.
