New Horizontal Gel Electrophoresis System Simplifies Protein Separation Procedures

A protein electrophoresis instrument newly available to biotech and life science researchers was designed to make polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) of proteins as easy as DNA gel electrophoresis.

The core of GE Healthcare’s (Uppsala, Sweden) horizontal Amersham ECL Gel System is a precast gel available in a variety of concentrations and well configurations. The Amersham ECL Gel is compatible with standard Laemmli buffers and has a shelf life of up to 12-months. The gel contains no SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate), making it appropriate for protein analysis under native and denaturing conditions, depending on the choice of running and sample loading buffers.

In contrast to hand cast gels, Amersham ECL Gel is highly reproducible, less time-consuming to prepare and requires no exposure to toxic acrylamide. Gels are available in 15-, 10-, and 2-well formats and as either homogeneous (10% or 12%) or gradient (4%-12%, 8%-16%, and 4%-20%) gels. The gels are thicker than most other precast and hand-cast gels, which reduces the risk of gel breakage in downstream processing.

Gels are processed using the Amersham ECL Gel Box, a dedicated electrophoresis unit with horizontal design, and significantly increased ease of use compared to vertical systems. The horizontal format allows for easier sample application, gives a full view of the entire electrophoresis run, and requires virtually no assembly, reducing preparation time.

Everything required to access and cut the gel is included in the cassette. If desired a 10-fold concentrated running buffer for SDS-PAGE is available, as well as pre-cut Hybond membranes for Western blotting applications.
