The manufacturing site of a German hi-tech water purification systems manufacturer is slated to become a major center for research and development as well as production of laboratory water-purification systems.

This plan was revealed when Thermo Fisher Scientific (Milford, MA, USA), a major supplier of biotechnology and life sciences products, announced the acquisition of TKA Wasseraufbereitungssysteme GmbH (Niederelbert, Germany).

TKE is a highly regarded European manufacturer with 60 employees and revenue of approximately EUR 10 million in 2009. It will now become a subdivision of Thermo Fisher Scientific, a major international company with approximately 35,000 employees and revenues of more than US$10 billion.

In its new configuration the company intends to continue to serve customers within pharmaceutical and biotech companies, hospitals and clinical diagnostic labs, universities, research institutions and government agencies, as well as in environmental and process control industries with the most practical solutions for the supply of ultrapure water.

"The addition of TKA's comprehensive offering of laboratory water purification systems to our portfolio of laboratory equipment and consumables enables us to meet our customers' growing needs for versatility and productivity in their laboratories," said Thomas Loewald, president laboratory equipment of Thermo Fisher Scientific. "The demand for ultrapure water, in particular, is driven by the ever-increasing sensitivity of analytical instruments used in life science research."
