Despite the easy access to information, photographs, and multimedia presentations afforded by the Internet, face-to-face meetings at large conferences and exhibitions continue to be important to biotechnology and life science professionals.

A case in point was the recent BIOTECHNICA 2010 (Hannover, Germany) exposition. This gathering brought together more than 9,500 individuals from 40 different nations who sought to discover the state-of-the-art in fields as diverse as healthcare, food production, industrial applications, environmental protection, laboratory equipment, and bioinformatics.

More than 32% of exhibitors were from outside of Germany, with Switzerland supplying the largest contingent of foreign exhibitors, followed by the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. Altogether, the exhibitor lineup comprised nearly 500 enterprises from 23 different nations.

About 25% of visitors to BIOTECHNICA 2010 were from outside Germany, an increase of about 5% compared to the previous year. Attendance was up from Europe, above all from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and France, but also from the United States and Russia. Prominent among the visitor nations were the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, and the United States. Approximately 5,000 visitors came from the R&D and scientific sectors, and they were primarily interested in biotechnology, lab equipment, and pharmaceutical/medical applications.

The next BIOTECHNICA will be held during October 11-13, 2011.
