Direct drive robot technology has been designed for applications such as drug target discovery or drug screening, where reducing cycle times means drugs traveling to market faster.

The Direct Drive Robot (DDR) was developed by Agilent Automation Solutions (Santa Clara, CA, USA). "Our customers are truly challenged with getting quality targets to support their development pipeline,” said Marc Beban, director of integrated systems and software marketing at Agilent Automation Solutions. "They need flexible, easy to use technology that is reliable and our direct drive technology means fewer moving parts to break down so that they can have the confidence they need to focus on the science, not the machinery.”

Direct drive technology reduces the number of moving parts, resulting in a robotic arm that has increased effectiveness and speed, moving smoothly with precision and accuracy. Innovative one-person, one-touch teaching makes the DDR extremely easy to configure to the user's application, minimizing setup personnel and time. The Direct Drive Robot uses configurable Z-travel technology to enable greater stacking of instruments and more functionality in a smaller footprint. Moreover, the DDR provides a 100% customizable automation solution that integrates with almost any third-party instrument.

The technology advances target identification and high-throughput screening for drug-discovery research and can also be used in genomics applications, including DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) sample preparation. The direct drive technology combined with powerful VWorks Automation Control software enables best-in-class automation solutions.

From stand-alone units to fully integrated systems, Agilent Automation Solutions teams key sample preparation and creative walk-away automation approaches with personalized customer service to provide complete solutions for the laboratory.
