An evolving site on the Internet is intended to provide up-to-date information regarding all aspects of protein biochemistry in a form easily accessible and modifiable.

The format of the "Human Proteinpedia” site resembles that of the popular "Wikipedia” in that any protein researcher is able to contribute and edit data. The site's database comprises protein expression, modification, and interactions. A paper in the February 2008 issue of the journal Nature Biotechnology noted that so far more than 71 laboratories from all over the world have filed entries for more than 15,230 human proteins.

"Advances in technology have made data generation much easier, but processing it and interpreting observations are now the major hurdles in science today,” explained senior author Dr. Akhilesh Pandey, associate professor of biological chemistry, pathology, and oncology at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD, USA). "We have created a repository that incorporates easy-to-use Web forms so that all researchers can contribute and share data. We are hoping that the scientific community will come together to contribute data generated in individual laboratories. This will not only improve the quality of the data but also increase the pace at which data is collected in a common repository.”
