A new positive expiratory pressure (PEP) therapy system facilitates simultaneous administration of vibratory PEP therapy and small volume nebulizer treatments in one treatment session.Posted on 12 Jan 2007
The acapella duet vibratory PEP therapy system is lightweight, compact, and easily transportable, and can be used by patients in any position-- reclining, standing, or sitting.
The system features a new streamlined body that contains a built-in port that accommodates most small volume nebulizers. Through this built-in port clinicians will be able to deliver nebulizer treatments and conveniently mobilize secretions at the same time; the acapella duet may also be used as a stand-alone therapy without a nebulizer. The system is easily disassembled and may be cleaned by boiling, autoclaving, or cleansing in the top rack of a dishwasher.
The acapella duet is a product of Smiths Medical (London, United Kingdom). "Our customers asked for a vibratory PEP therapy product with a more streamlined design that would accommodate nebulizer treatments, and we listened,” said Fred Richards, director of research and business development at Smiths Medical. "The acapella duet vibratory PEP therapy system provides added convenience and versatility to the already excellent family of acapella bronchial hygiene products.”
PEP therapy is reminiscent of pursed-lip breathing; patients exhale through a resistance, generating a positive pressure that allows airflow to move behind obstructed airways through collateral ventilation, thereby splinting the airways open, promoting the mobilization of bronchial secretions, and permitting better dispersion of inhaled aerosol medication.
