A new nonacrylamide, nontoxic, high-resolution electrophoresis precast hydrogel is designed to increase protein transfer efficiency during Western blotting.

Called Blot-EX, the hydrogel offers overall recovery efficiency up to 90%, obtained with significantly reduced transfer times (less than 10 minutes) when compared to industry standard polyacrylamide precast gels. Blot-EX operates in the size range 30-200 kDa.

"The unique polymer matrix of controlled porosity makes Blot-EX gels the best choice for research people who need fast and high protein recovery,” remarked Franck Montagne, chief scientific officer of Elchrom Scientific (Cham, Switzerland). The company's short-term development plans include extending the Blot-EX line to cover the ranges below 30 kDa and above kDa, including advanced solutions for proteomics as well as industrial small interfering RNA (siRNA) purification solutions and pursuing the development of the application-based business on a worldwide basis.

"We are leveraging the standards of quality, purity, and yield that we have demonstrated in nucleic acid applications and applying our know-how to the field of proteomics with this striking innovation,” stated Jean-Louis Roux dit Buisson, CEO of Elchrom Scientific.
