New Regional Biotech Center in India

Eight countries in the Middle East and Asia have joined together to form a regional biotechnology center based in Hyderabad, India.Posted on 15 Feb 2005
The countries are Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Israel, Iran, Singapore, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka. Their goal is to accelerate the growth of biotechnology in the region. The new biotechnology center is called the Federation of Asian Biotech Associations.
To launch the center, a three-day conference was held in Hyderabad. Attending were trade delegations from countries in the region as well as from Italy, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Britain, the United States, and Australia, Among the topics discussed by attendees were research and clinical trials, intellectual property rights, venture funding, and agricultural biotechnology.
"The purpose of the formation of the federation is to create a common platform for development of biotechnology in the entire Asian region, and enable the countries to collaborate with each other and share their experiences,” stated Anwar Nasim, chairman of the National Commission of Biotechnology in Pakistan.
