Genencor to Commercialize Decontamination Technology

An exclusive license to manufacture and sell enzymes to decontaminate certain organophosphate-based nerve agents such as sarin has been granted to Genencor (Palo Alto, CA, USA) by the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, USA).

Genencor plans to scale up and manufacture the enzymes that can be added to water and dispensed in foams, sprays, or detergents. The enzymes will be made available to military and civilian first responders, such as firefighters, police, and hazardous material response teams. The enzymes neutralize the chemical agents and have the benefit of being noncorrosive and environmentally friendly.

"This government-industry partnership demonstrates how the tools of biotechnology can be used to address important problems facing society,” said Jean-Jacques Bienaime, chairman and chief executive officer of Genencor. The company is a diversified biotechnology company that develops and delivers innovative products and services into the health care, agri-processing, consumer, and industrial markets.
