Patent Issued on First Genetic Banking System

The first U.S. patent to be issued for an e-genetic banking system and supporting technology has been announced.

The system enables genetic profile data to be securely stored while remaining accessible for authorized purposes, reconsent, and reuse. The patent covers the methods, processes, and e-systems for securely storing, analyzing, and managing genetic data for translational genomic research, pharmacogenomics, and molecular diagnostics. The system, called enTrust, was developed by First Genetic Trust, Inc. (Chicago, IL, USA).

The enTrust genetic banking platform provides coordinated management of sample and phenotype data with capabilities for sample tracking and reuse, data acquisition and management, data security, and management of informed consent in support of pharmaceutical research, clinical development, as well as genetic programs in the provider and government sectors.

"We have created a novel e-technology which, for the first time, fully addresses the critical issues of genetic data privacy, confidentiality, and reuse at the information systems level,” said Arthur L. Holden, chairman and CEO of First Genetic Trust.
