Research Alliance to Study Apoptosis

A strategic research alliance to study programmed cell death has been announced by scientists at the University of Birmingham (UK) and Guava Technologies, Inc. (Hayward, CA, USA).

Researchers in the department of chemical engineering at Birmingham will explore how Guava's benchtop microvolume cell analysis systems can accelerate the department's monitoring of cell cultures for apoptosis. The cell analysis systems, PCA and PCA-96, streamline cell analysis research by enabling scientists to perform a variety of whole cell assays at their bench-tops with less than a day of training. The Guava systems require only small numbers of cells in microliter sample volumes to produce highly accurate and easy-to-read results.

"The Guava PCA system will enable us to perform experiments that we could not easily accomplish with either manual microscopy or centralized flow cytometry systems,” said Professor Mohamed Al-Rubeai. "Our alliance with Guava Technologies will significantly increase both the speed and productivity for some of our key research programs in the field of apoptosis.”

Guava states that its products have broad applications in life sciences research, drug discovery, and biopharmaceutical production, but also offer potential for use in clinical testing and blood processing, as well as other areas where single cell analysis is important.
